IntroductionAccess Control
Control who can view and edit your files with granular permissions.
The Files app provides granular control over who can view and edit files.
Visibility Modes
| Mode | Description |
|---|---|
| Private | Only the owner can access |
| Custom | Shared with specific people, teams, or organizations |
| Inherit | Uses the same permissions as the parent folder |
Changing File Visibility
- Right-click on a file and select Set Visibility on File (or Set Default Visibility for folders)
- Or click the ... menu on the file row and select the visibility option
- In the Access Control modal, choose who should have access
- Add members, teams, or organizations with the appropriate access level
Permission Levels
When sharing with Custom visibility:
| Level | Capabilities |
|---|---|
| Owner | Full control including sharing and deletion |
| Editor | Can view, edit, and comment |
| Viewer | Read-only access |
Folder Permission Inheritance
Files inside folders can inherit permissions from their parent:
- Set visibility on a folder to control all contents
- Child files with "Inherit" visibility automatically follow parent permissions
- Override inheritance by setting explicit visibility on individual files
Sharing Files
To share a file with specific users:
- Right-click on the file or click the ... menu
- Select Set Visibility on File
- In the Access Control modal, add members, teams, or organizations
- Set the appropriate access level for each
- Click Save to apply changes
Best Practices
- Use folder-level permissions for consistent access control
